Playing the game

What is Puppy Code?

A calm puzzle game about giving instructions. A ball is somewhere in the garden. You build a plan, one step at a time, then press Run and the puppy does exactly what the plan says. There are twenty-seven gardens.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up and no sign-in. Open the game and start playing.

The screen says to turn the device sideways.

The game is landscape only, so the garden and the plan fit side by side. Turn the device sideways and the game appears. If it stays put, check that screen rotation is not locked in your device's own settings.

How do I get to a different garden?

Press the menu button at the top left. That opens the list of gardens. Gardens unlock in order, so the next one opens once the one before it is finished.

My child is stuck. The puppy did not reach the ball.

Nothing has gone wrong. The game never calls an answer wrong. It says what the puppy tried and what stopped it. Change one step and press Run again. There are no timers and no way to lose, so there is no hurry.

How do I clear the plan in one garden?

Press the round key beside Run. That puts the garden back to how you found it and leaves every other garden alone.

How do I start all the gardens again?

Open the list of gardens from the menu button, scroll to the bottom, and press "Start all the gardens again". Every garden goes back to the beginning.

How old does a child need to be?

The early gardens work for a child who cannot read yet, because pictures carry the meaning. The later gardens ask you to write the plan out in words. It plays best with a grown-up sitting beside the child, taking turns.

Progress and privacy

Where is my progress saved?

On the device itself, in the browser's or the app's own storage. It never leaves the device and it is never sent anywhere.

Can my progress follow me to another device?

Not at the moment. Because nothing is stored on a server, each device keeps its own progress. Clearing the browser's site data, or opening the game in a different browser, starts the gardens again.

Does the game collect any data about us?

No. There are no accounts, no analytics, no adverts and no tracking of any kind. See the privacy policy, which is short.

How do I delete my data?

Delete the app, or clear the site data for the game in your browser. That is everything. There is no account to close, because nothing is held anywhere but on your own device.

Where it runs

Does it work without a connection?

The app on a phone or tablet keeps the whole game on the device, so it plays with no connection at all. The browser version needs a connection to load, and then plays without one until you close the tab.

Is there anything to pay for?

No. The whole game is free. There is nothing to buy inside it and no subscription.
